In a surprising turn of events, Saqlain Mushtaq, the renowned spin bowling maestro, has decided to withdraw himself from the coaching staff of the Multan Sultans for the highly anticipated Pakistan Super League 2024. Citing scheduling reasons, Saqlain’s absence leaves a void in the team’s coaching lineup.
The franchise has promptly confirmed that David Parsons, former performance director of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), will fill the position vacated by Saqlain Mushtaq.
Parsons, known for his expertise in spin bowling, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Notably, he served as the ECB’s national spin bowling coach from 2005 to 2007 before diversifying his involvement in various sporting activities.
Beyond the realm of cricket, Parsons currently holds the performance director position for England Netball, temporarily stepping away from his full-time role to embark on this exciting opportunity with the Multan Sultans. His breadth of experience and versatility have left a positive impression on Sultans’ owner, Ali Tareen.
Interestingly, Parsons is no stranger to Pakistan, having previously worked there. During his time at the Multan Sultans Academy, formerly known as the Ali Tareen Academy, Parsons spent a week overseeing a group of young spinners in Lodhran, South Punjab. Coincidentally, one of the talented spinners he had the privilege of mentoring was left-arm wrist-spinner Faisal Akram.
With Parsons assuming the coaching reins, Faisal Akram will again benefit from his mentor’s guidance, reuniting with Parsons as a vital part of the Multan Sultans’ squad. “I am especially excited to reconnect with Faisal Akram, with whom I had the pleasure of working at the academy,” said Parsons, looking forward to continuing their coaching journey together.
To further bolster the coaching staff, Alex Hartley, the former England Women’s spinner, will assist Parsons in nurturing the talent within the Multan Sultans’ camp. Hartley’s expertise adds another dimension to the team’s coaching setup, enhancing their ability to develop a formidable spin bowling arsenal.
Reflecting on Saqlain Mushtaq’s departure, Ali Khan Tareen, the owner and chief executive of the Multan Sultans, expressed his initial enthusiasm for having such an esteemed figure on board. However, unforeseen scheduling conflicts emerged, necessitating the temporary suspension of their partnership. Tareen remains optimistic, affirming the franchise’s intention to tap into Saqlain’s vast experience later.
As the PSL 9 schedule for the ninth season approaches, the Multan Sultans navigate an unexpected change in their coaching staff. The arrival of David Parsons brings a fresh perspective and invaluable knowledge to the team, while the reunion between Parsons and Faisal Akram holds excellent promise. With their combined expertise, the coaching duo aims to shape the Multan Sultans into a formidable force as they march into the highly anticipated PSL season.
